The short version

Adobe’s AI image suite, trained on Adobe Stock and licensed content. Integrated into Photoshop, Illustrator, and Express. Outputs carry commercial-use rights.

What we liked

  • Deep Creative Cloud integration brings generation inside Photoshop, Lightroom and Illustrator.
  • Image Model 4 Ultra renders human subjects and architecture with stronger realism.
  • Free tier includes 25 monthly credits with no watermark and commercial use included.
  • Supports vectors, video and audio from a single platform up to 4K output.

Could be better

  • Bloomberg reported around 5 percent of training data was AI-generated, including Midjourney output, which undercuts the commercially safe positioning.
  • Text rendering is poor, with unreadable branding on packaging and logos.
  • Photography 1TB plan credits dropped from 500 to 25 in June 2025.
  • Hands, faces and complex multi-subject prompts remain inconsistent.

Overview

Adobe Firefly's strongest argument is the same one it has always been: integration. Generative Fill in Photoshop, Generative Remove in Lightroom and Generative Shape Fill in Illustrator all run inside the apps designers already pay for, so there is no round-trip to a separate generator. For Creative Cloud subscribers, that workflow continuity carries real weight.

The £9.99 entry tier puts Firefly within reach of solo designers, and the platform extends beyond images to vectors, video and audio from one subscription. Image Model 4 Ultra is the most realistic version of the engine to date, with stronger rendering of human subjects, animals and architectural elements than Model 3.

The commercial-safety story is the part that needs more careful reading than Adobe's marketing suggests. Adobe positioned Firefly as trained on licensed Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content and public-domain material, with enterprise IP indemnification on higher tiers. Bloomberg reported in 2024 that around 5 percent of the training data was AI-generated, including output from Midjourney that had been submitted to Adobe Stock.

Entrepreneur and Yahoo Finance covered the same finding. The figure is small in proportional terms, but it directly complicates the ethical-AI framing that drove the launch narrative and the indemnification pitch. For agencies building on the commercially safe claim, the disclosure is worth factoring in.

Pricing transparency is the other friction point. PetaPixel highlighted that there is no clear usage counter or breakdown of what consumes generative credits, and in June 2025 Adobe cut credit allocations on Photography 1TB plans from 500 to 25 per month. That is a 95 percent reduction landed on existing subscribers, and the change reframes Firefly from a generous bundled extra to a metered add-on.

Video generation burns credits aggressively, with users reporting 500-credit losses on failed five-second clips and no preview before charging. Output quality has known weak spots. Text generation is described as abysmal by independent reviewers, producing unreadable branding on packaging and logos.

AppleInsider's hands-on with the Firefly AI Assistant reported the tool ignoring aspect ratios, fabricating prices and rendering nonsense words in place of real text. Hands, faces and complex multi-subject prompts remain inconsistent, with warped hands and distorted faces persisting in Fill and Expand even after the Image 4 upgrade.

Our read: Firefly is the practical choice for designers already inside Creative Cloud who need generative fill and expand inside their existing workflow. Anyone leaning on the commercial-safety claim or expecting generous credit allowances should look at the Bloomberg findings and the June 2025 credit cut before committing.
